Nothing but Good News for Two Wheel Riders in Alberta
Edmonton, Alberta – Any reason is a good reason to visit the 2010 Edmonton Motorcycle and
ATV show. But this year the Alberta government has given two wheel enthusiasts another reason
to enjoy this one and only premier motorcycle, scooter, and ATV event.
Why you ask! Because Alberta’s Transportation Ministry introduced updated moped regulations
that came into effect on July 1, 2009. These changes to moped regulations now harmonize with
Transport Canada regulations and will allow more 14-year-old scooter drivers on Alberta streets.
But, these new changes don't just apply to young drivers; they apply to anyone who wants to ride a
50 cc scooter. This is especially good news to city dwellers who want an easy, inexpensive way to
drive on Alberta’s residential streets.
The smallest scooters around, at 50 cubic centimeters, were previously classified as motorcycles in
Alberta because they typically weigh more than 55 kilograms. However, the provincial
government decided to remove that weight restriction, which means those scooters, which can
travel up to 70 km/h, are now classified as mopeds and open to drivers as young as 14 with a Class
7 learner's permit.
With this information in mind, new and experienced riders alike can tour the Edmonton show,
taking in the latest design in scooters and motorcycles and parents with kids between 6 and 12
years of age; can take advantage of the Yamaha riding academy for kids. With certified instruction,
the latest motocross gear and a 15-minute riding session, your child will be safely introduced to the
wonderful world of off-road riding.
But that’s not all! “We’re excited about the new 2010 models that will be on display,” said Bob
Ramsay, President of MMIC. “Our members, who are the major manufacturers, are committed to
showcasing their newest models at the Edmonton show because this gives potential buyers a
firsthand look at the new line-ups for the coming year.”
This is the perfect opportunity. Whether you are a novice or experienced rider these shows are your
opportunity to talk to the experts about your passion. You will see the best of the best on display
from big name manufacturers like Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Harley-Davidson, BMW,
Ducati, Victory, KTM, Aprilia, MotoGuzzi, Arctic Cat, BRP (Can Am), CMI, Vespa, Triumph and
Polaris to name a few.
